New Carbon Monoxide Detectors guidelines for California

Wondering about the new Carbon Monoxide detectors?  Here’s some information about the new building standards and where the should be installed. These detectors can now be easily purchased at local home improvement stores. Some even are sold as combo Smoke/Carbon Monoxide detectors. Here’s the info.

Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn in-completely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel are potential sources of carbon monoxide. Vehicles running in an attached garage can also produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

So where should you place the detectors?

 1. Building standards require an approved Carbon Monoxide Detector be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms.

 2. Manufacturer’s also recommend that additional Carbon Monoxide Detectors be installed on every level and in every bedroom of a home to provide extra protection.

Where not to install:

A detector should not be placed within fifteen feet of  heating or cooking appliances or in or near very humid areas such as bathrooms.

Another item to note is that Carbon Monoxide Detectors are not permitted to be painted!  I hope this little bit of information helps and reminds you to install of one of these life saving items in your home!
